Spring break. Another surf trip south for the South Bay crew. Stay in the San Clemente State park right across form the one and only El Camino market. If you got the money out the door you go with a case of Coors or a gallon of Red Mountain Vin Rose. If memory serves me right , it was 5 bucks for the beer and 1.25 for the wine. Were doing good now! Weather was good this week and we got early so. swell. So much for the day time activity. As the sun sets in the west we turn our attention to Balboa. That's where the girls are. The place was always jump'm on Easter week.
The place was jammed with people out of school. Mostly high school kids but some college too.
There were many houses rented for the week to party. Some even had names on the windows. Open house if you will. Walking down the street I ran into Jim Wicker and Adrian Eznard trying to fix the 50 ford throttle linkage. This was going to be good, a string thru the hood pulled by whoever was driving. As they worked on the car I wondered into the house and meet up with Mike Doyle, now we had some to drink by now don't you know and for some reason the girls in there wanted us out? Imagine that! Al I remember is that we were being hit on the heads with brooms. I remember seeing Eznard and Wicker driving away and seeing them at the park the next morning. Meanwhile back at the park after some good surf, drinks were had by all. Some one yelled that the cops were coming in. I don't know how this happened, but Murry Bishop was put up into a tree. Were going to hide him from the cops, yea right. I don't think anyone got picked up, so we got away with it. Of course, a number of guys went down the path to the beach and got lost. Just another great surf trip out of the South Bay. More fun to come. Tim

Tales from the South Bay. One of the many trips north to surf Rincon or further up the coast always had good results. One of the best, we have film, was when Tom Constable, Peff Eick and I went north for a week. We would hook up with Dick Natland, who was in school at UCSB studying to be an architect. He was one of the real good surfers from Palos Verdes. This trip we went to the Hollister Ranch. The surf was great. We surfed a new spot that we named Crumple Car. There was an old wrecked car on the beach. Sooo thats it. It was around the corner, north of Drakes point. It is now called Little Drakes, Oh well. Bob Cooper said we were the first to surf the spot. He was one of the first guys to surf the ranch in the min 50"S, so he should know. Great wave, fun was had by all. Going back to Santa Barbara we would stay with Natland. As I remember there was a guy living with Natland that had altered his Purcell tennies. You know, the ones with the blue line on the toe. Anyway, he made em look like sandal's, Peff thought that was cool, and started to work on his. Only took a few minutes to ruin a good pair of shoes. The next day we went to Rincon to be greeted by 8 ft surf, film of that too. Tom took 8 mm movies that are now on VHS tape. Real fun to look at so long after the fact. More to come! Tim, from the bay.

A surf trip to the Huntington Pier with John Kemper in what was the best surf hearse ever. The hearse was a 1948 Packard. On the rear fender was the name "The Body Snatcher"
On the back door was a picture of a grave yard at sundown. On the head stones were the names of The Big Bopper, Buddy Holly and Richey Vallens. The art work was really good as I remember. The hearse was dropped a few inches in the front and had Ram tube exhaust pipes straight out underneath the car. It really looked cool. I can't remember who the other guys were this day. We were parked right by the entrance to the pier and after getting out of the water some older girls came by and said that we were sick. That brought out a few good hoots from all the guys. Oh yea, just another good day of surfing for some South Bay surfers. Tim Tuthill/More to come!

An episode at the Hermosa pier , 59 or 60. Mr. Doyle shows up in his Messershmit car/motorcycle to surf one morning. It seems that the vehicle finds it's way into the sand somehow?? Tim Kelly, Danny O'Conner and a host of other 22 nd st guys are on hand to see this event take place. Doyle gets out of the water, takes one look and gets all upset. The boy had no sense of humor. You gotta know that anyone that was around this bunch for very long fell victim to some serious practical jokes. When Kelly and O'Conner are in the area, look out!! More to come on the South Bay Hi Jinks. Tim who lived at 22 nd st
