San Onofre steep in tradition, like Dogpatch for instance.
If you're a bocci-ball freak I'll bet you have no
conception on how "The Patch" becan. Let's returned
to the fifties when non surfing, motor-home, freakazoids
from "Smashadena" invaded Ól' Nofre. Fresh out of
USC, looking for the California Beach Life--ski bums
in winter, beach bums in summer, California Dreaming.
August 28, 1950 LIFE MAG runs a piece about Ski Bums
at San Onofre featuring Hammerhead, Burrhead,Bob
Lombard, Warren Miller, "Wake up Barney, it's Wedbesday"
Wilkes, and Obie Rod. Boy, was LIFE fortunate, because had
it been 2005, SOSC BOD would have the ACLU all over the
story like flies on dogschitt. All you members, nobody
complained their little enclave would be invaded by
surfing wan2bees. Several years later when motorhomes
became 'de riguer' invaders packed up, animals and all,
on Friday night headed for Old 'Nofre with their
Zenith 1000 set for Webley Edwards'Hawaii Calls.
When they all sobered up Saturday morning everyone
walked their cute little pooch south to a place named
Dogpath near the end of the road. Nowaday, people
refuse to attend 'Nofre without being led by a
drooling animal. A hundred miles up the coast at Malibu,
a handful of rock and rollers.... well you know the rest.
