Tales from the South Bay. One of the many trips north to surf Rincon or further up the coast always had good results. One of the best, we have film, was when Tom Constable, Peff Eick and I went north for a week. We would hook up with Dick Natland, who was in school at UCSB studying to be an architect. He was one of the real good surfers from Palos Verdes. This trip we went to the Hollister Ranch. The surf was great. We surfed a new spot that we named Crumple Car. There was an old wrecked car on the beach. Sooo thats it. It was around the corner, north of Drakes point. It is now called Little Drakes, Oh well. Bob Cooper said we were the first to surf the spot. He was one of the first guys to surf the ranch in the min 50"S, so he should know. Great wave, fun was had by all. Going back to Santa Barbara we would stay with Natland. As I remember there was a guy living with Natland that had altered his Purcell tennies. You know, the ones with the blue line on the toe. Anyway, he made em look like sandal's, Peff thought that was cool, and started to work on his. Only took a few minutes to ruin a good pair of shoes. The next day we went to Rincon to be greeted by 8 ft surf, film of that too. Tom took 8 mm movies that are now on VHS tape. Real fun to look at so long after the fact. More to come! Tim, from the bay.
