"THE CURSE OF EDDIE MCBRIDE"
The Unknown Masked "Rider" arrived early, his board a
clear 9'6", no frills Yater. Six AM comes fast at
The Old 'Nofre. Masked "Rider" entered his secret parking spot,
not far south of the ever-still wind indicator. Carefully,
he untied the Yater, set it on the cool, damp, morning
sand. The beach was empty, save for some mischievous
skunks frolicking on the dirt road. The Rider eased to
water, splashing himself, and waxing his board. It was
a nice warm water, but it was August, with no wind, a
perfect day. He smiled to himself, and paddled to the
reef, his flattened hand barely breaking water. He verified
his mark, looking beneath the glassy surface. He smiled once
again, there it was a few feet beneath the surface in water
crystal clear. It was the EMcB gold doubloon, a surfer's
good fortune. The "Rider" felt confident mow. He positioned
the Yater, ready for a late take-off when the magic wave
arrived out of the South. Waiting alone, The "Rider" contemplated
the smooth aquamarine tone in the water, the bubbling whitewater,
the supreme stillness in the air. Suddenly, movement on the
horizon The "Rider" knew this was the one. One stroke, he was
in and up. The transparent comber thrust Rider forward with
great acceleration, foam was spiny up and over the back of
the wave, then he was flying across the pristine face. Fish
scurried out of his way. Right now "Rider" was King. He leaned
into a Soul Arch bottom turn, nose tweaked several times, angled
left back right, stalled to the max, released and blew across
the bowl. "Rider" was magnificent. Oh dear, I'm at Starbuck's,
my times up, some Maven wants the machine.
