.

Thanks for the input. The film company
is producing stuff for "Summer 1956" featuring
characters of the sun. "Riding Giants" has footage
edited from "Search for Surf" filmed in 1960.
Tubesteak's Roy'l Haw'n is featured start to finish
in "Search" it's 78 seconds running time. "Giants"
is 12 seconds. Now you understand the pinch
they're in. We need "Search for Surf".
PLEASE HELP!

You probably didn’t know Robert Redford was a surfer.

But when the venerable actor introduced the surf flick "Riding Giants" during his Sundance Film Festival in 2004, Redford noted his special connection to the sport.

"In his introduction of the film, he talked about growing up in California and surfing Rincon and San Onofre," recalled writer/director Stacy Peralta.

As the first documentary to ever open at Sundance, Peralta and the "Riding Giants" cast were afforded red carpet treatment.

"I’m standing behind the scenes going, ‘My God – Redford just said my name,’" said Peralta, who directed the critically acclaimed "Dogtown and Z-Boys."

Peralta, along with big wave pioneers Greg Noll and Jeff Clark and "Riding Giants" co-writer Sam George will once again get the red carpet treatment, as they reunite for a screening of the film tomorrow at the Fremont Theater. The San Luis Obispo International Film Festival event begins at 7 p.m. and will be followed by a Q & A.

"Riding Giants" chronicles the history of big wave surfing, beginning with Noll, who started surfing huge waves in the 50s.

"Every time you go out in the really big surf, it’s kind of like going to drop bombs over Germany in a B-29," Noll said. "You might not come back."

Good stuff! That's why they'd like to have the footage, "Malibu The Summer of 1956" is going to open at the Santa Barbara Film Festival when it's done. That Greg sure has a way with words. Nobody ever mentions if Jessica Perralta is Stacy's sister.

I wonder if Greg meant in a B-17.

This is a really interesting coincidence because it was Leslie Williams who taught Redford to surf, and, incidently, to drink Tequila too. In fact, it was Leslie Williams who got Redford his first job in Hollywood. He got Redford a job as a studio runner (a gopher basically) when Leslie Williams was working as the only paid consultant to the movie "Gidget."
You have been so wrong about Leslie Williams. Les, as his MANY MANY friends call him, is a piece of LIVING SURF HISTORY. He is on the cover of the greatest surf album ever, recorded by the beach boys. Heck, they aren't even pictured. It is just the hero of a man, Les Williams, and the biggest monster of a wave you have ever seen. He even sang background on the album. Unfortunately, his singing contribution was uncredited because of a rift between the directors guild (Les was a director by that time) and the recording artists guild.
You know so little about anything.
Les is the one who invented the short board in 1965 when his longboard was broken by the largest wave ever ridden. The crushing wave broke his board in half, and he just kept on riding the then 5'6" board ---- in the tube no less ---- to shore. Hobie Alter heard about this and designed the first modern short boards after consulting with Les.
And that bit you wrote about Les not being the founder of the Surf Club at San Onofre was also wrong. The only reason that Les is not on the paperwork as the club founder is that he was a minor at the time and the lawyer in San Clemente who drafted the club's incorporation documents said that a minor couldn't sign so Les asked Wilkes to sign. This was ironic since it was actually Les, working as a paralegal, who ghost wrote the club's incorporating documents because the lawyer had violated the Mann Act with his 19 year-old secretary (back then, anyone under 21 was a minor) and Les was barely able to get him off in time to get the documents finished before Les had to go to Korea for the war.
So, now that you have trashed Les Williams, you will be sorry to learn that he has not only a copy of the video you need, but the original footage, since, as can come no surprise, he was the cinematographer for the film you idiot. Maybe you shouldn’t go around trashing the fine name of Les Williams. You never know when you might need something from him.

It's unbelievable you have turned on the spigot of knowledge. Readers of this BLOG will believe you. One question, if Les was technical advisor for Gidget, how does Frank Donahue fit into the mix. Don't know who Donahue is, well, I didn't think so.

Donahue is another nobody. Get a life. Give credit where credit is due. I didn't say that I invented the internet. But I had a lot to do with creating the San Onofre Surf Club and the development of surfing in California and Hawaii. Your problem is that you have done nothing of note in your life.

I, for one, am going to contribute to the Les Wiliams foundation which whose primary goal is to erect a 40 bronze statue of Les at the entrance to surf beach. You to can contribute by leaving a donation in large unmarked bills behind bathroom #4. We will make sure it goes to the foundation.
